I'd
like to recommend
Confucius Lives Next Door by
T.R.Reid [Vintage Books 2000)]. It’s the story of an American who
moves to modern Japan. Through the interaction between Mr. Reid and an
elderly Japanese neighbor. Reid learns the influence of the ancient
wisdom of Confucius on Japan today. The concept of “wa,” community
harmony, so important to the Japanese, seems to be missing from the
manners and customs of Reid and his family. They must understand
Confucius if they are to understand and adapt to Japanese life. It is
currently available in paperback for under $11.”
Dr. Gary
McKiddy (SCC Adjunct – History)
Chris
Van Mierlo (SCC ACE Center) recommends three books by celebrated
South African writer Nadine Gordimer: None to Accompany Me,
a novel (Penguin, 1995): The Essential Gesture: Writing, Politics
and Places, (Knopf, 1988) and Writing and Being
(Harvard University Press, 1995). “The second and third are collections
of essays about Africa, writing about Africa, and the writer’s
responsibility to his or her society. Good stuff.”
Brian Smith (SCC Art) calls attention to Milan Kundera’s The
Unbearable Lightness of Being. “Brilliant story about sexuality
and the Czech revolt in 1968. Every sentence is like a poem that tells a
story…”
